For many years SSHL has been working with the MYP, which very much reflects the international character of the school. It is an international programme starting in year 7 at SSHL, taught in both English and Swedish.
The fundamental values and aims of the MYP are very similar to the national Swedish programme, but the MYP emphasises a more varied approach, whilst helping you to find your preferred ways of learning.
The MYP provides you with a sound base for the Business and Management Programme in English and the IB Diploma Programme as well as the Swedish high school programmes.
The first main concept in the MYP is ‘Holistic Learning’. The idea is that as a student you will more easily see the connections and relationships between the different subjects, making it easier and more enjoyable to learn.
‘Intercultural Awareness’ is the second important concept in this programme – through a wider perspective of yourself and your friends, you have the chance to develop into a more open and tolerant world citizen.
The third concept is ‘Communication’. The aim is that you should gain the knowledge and self-confidence to put forward your own ideas in different languages, both orally and in writing.
At SSHL and within the MYP Programme, we emphasise that society will not function unless all individuals make a positive contribution. All students therefore take part in the ‘Community and Service’ initiative, both as an individual and as part of a group. You and your class will get the opportunity to find different ways to make a helpful contribution.
At SSHL all MYP students study the subjects in the Swedish national curriculum, which are divided into eight groups: A-language is English and Swedish/ Swedish as a second language.
B-language is English at higher level and French, Spanish or German at foundation level.
Mathematics is an important subject, and we try and organise teaching and help at different levels.
The Humanities subjects are Geography, History, Religion and Social Science.
The Science subjects are Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Technology includes, Technical Design, Textiles and Home Economics. You will have the opportunity to work within the area of design and inventions in different forms, amongst other things.
The Arts subjects are Visual Arts and Music, through which you will have many opportunities to develop your own creativity.
Through Physical Education you will benefit from the school’s impressive sports facilities, both indoor and outdoor.
During your final MYP year you will work with a Personal Project. This should reflect one of your interests and could be either practical or theoretical. The Personal Project is a good way to prepare for similar assignments on the high school programmes. This final year of the MYP is equivalent to the first year of the Swedish high school. This class, which we call SIB1, is designed for students aiming to continue with either the IB Diploma Programme or the Business and Management Programme.
